Ghana – Chapter 9

Accra, March 7, 2005

"I think this is Chapter 9"

I think this is Chapter 9.  I remember writing chapter 8, but I don’t have any record of it.  If I sent you guys chapter 8 and someone still has a copy could you send it back to me so I won’t write the same thing twice?

My Neighborhood

I live in a more or less residential part of Accra called Labone Estates (pronounced La-bo-ney’).

This is a common street sign.  I’m not quite sure why there are so many streets named “Do Not Urinate Here”, but it’s kind of a quaint way of making people feel at home.

I live behind an orphanage called the Osu Children’s Home.  My street, Klotey Crescent, actually runs off of Orphan’s Crescent.  This is the main entrance to the orphanage. (two kids playing by the building.)

Here’s another view inside Osu Children’s Home taken from over the wall…

Here are some older kids playing ping pong (this is the side of the orphanage facing my house).  That’s burning trash in the foreground.

This is a public telephone booth on the corner near my house.  The guy rents out his cell phone to others to make calls.  2,000 cedis per call (about $0.22).

Here’s my local barbershop – The God is Great barbershop.  Daniel wasn’t around that day.

Here’s an interior shot.  Notice how close the fan is to the kitchen chair (excuse me, the “barber chair”).  Also, beer and coke on hand for the thirsty customers.

Here’s a shot of an outdoor barber, working under a tree.  Less capital intensive (no fan).

Daniel also runs a business center next to his barbershop.  Notice the development of a corporate identity thingy with the God is Great part…

Here’s a beauty salon down the street from my house (this is for Laura and Tara)...  Looks like they take in laundry too.

Evangelical Christians (better known as the Christian Hezbollah) have made big inroads into Africa.  What do you suppose the Friday “Deliverance & Prophetic Service” is like?

I’m saving up photos of the different anti-thief wall toppings in the area (barbed wire, broken glass, etc.) for the next chapter.
