Ghana – Chapter 11

 "Sylvanus and Family"

I’m off to Bamako, Mali on Monday for a conference.  I’ll be there until Saturday.

I have to fly Accra/Abidjan/Dakar/Bamako to get there; Which is like flying from Boston to Atlanta going through New York and Chicago.  There aren’t good connections between African countries – only between Africa and Europe.

Sylvanus (my gardener and general butler) brought his family by to meet me today.  So I took some pictures for you all.

This is Sylvanus, with his wife Mercy and their daughter Sofarina (I’m not sure about her name yet).  The daughter is about 3.

Here’s mother and daughter

And daughter on her own…

I found out that Sylvanus used to be a primary school teacher (when he did his National Service).  Apparently Mercy was one of his students!  I’m guessing that he’s now around 30 and she’s around 18.  They’re good church going types (Pentecostal).  She works in a beauty shop and has a market stall selling soap and other household items.  Sofarina goes to a preschool while her parents work.

Here’s another shot of Sofarina

See ya’ll in a week,

Big Daddy Greg
